Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

Notre coup de coeur <3 du moment...

A day by bike

The best thing about riding a bike is that it gets you to A to B...and C and D, etc. It sounds simple, but I think some people forget that a bicycle is a legitimate means of transportation--it's not just something you "do" for a workout.

Here is an example of a bike-filled day: fun, function and l'effort physique combined.

I started by day by running some errands before work.

On my actual commute, I spotted this awesome pink BMX! Thanks to Alex, for letting me take this picture and for rocking an awesome pose.

I made it to work, but forgot to take photo. Oops. Insert imaginary picture of my bike locked at a ring and post stand here.

It was a Farmer's Market Day, so I offer you a picture of some lovely pumpkins instead.

Later on, I made my way over to a community meeting.

To get there, I made a point of trying a "bike lane only" route (something I can't do for when I ride to work). My impressions on this day: while I appreciated that the painted white line meant that I didn't have to worry as much about the cars driving on my left, I was even more preoccupied with watching out for cars moving in and out of the bike lane to park, as well as the bus, which also weaved in and out of the bike lane to pick-up and drop-off passengers.

In any case, I got there early and spent a bit of time drooling over a couple of very snazzy racing bikes.

Plus tard, SerialJay showed up and Murdoch had to join in as well.

At the end of the evening, SerialJay was starving since he arrived straight from work. So off we went for some casual French fare (évidemment): moules-frites et crêpes.

Et voilà, à vélo from A to Z and from day to night.

How not to use a U-lock

Fall is officially upon us, which means shorter days, cooler mornings, more traffic and...less bike parking at work. Yes, we're still riding.

While I'm in awe of the number of people who take their bikes to my workplace, I hate arriving at work to find all the ring and post bike stands taken! I balk at locking up at the regular bike racks because:
- it's a struggle to slide my small bike into and out of the racks alongside the giant-sized "regular" beater bikes
- given the tight space, it's a HUGE hassle to use my U-lock and cable combo. In short, ça m'énerve.

Yes, it takes me forever to lock-up (compared to SerialJay, au moins*) because I'm terrified of coming out to find my bike missing (entirely or partially). Hence the U-lock and cable combo. Obviously (or maybe not), having both does not mean you are immune to bike theft. Take for example this bike, which was parked at my workplace today:

It's a decent bike, minus the missing saddle. Here's a close-up of the famous U-lock and cable combo:

No comment except that that Hal would most likely give this guy an F. On the plus side, at least he's not taking up space at a ring and post :p

*I think this calls for a timed "lock-off" between SerialJay and I.

Bicycles and Brioche

Labour Day has past, the days are getting shorter and the mornings are getting cooler. You know what this means. The short summer season is coming to an end. It was a summer staycation for us this year, which gave us the chance to experience city life that you wouldn't normally get to experience when you're doing the Mon-Fri 9-5 rat race. One of my favourite things: mid-week brunch! Sans line-ups and 100% hassle free! What a concept!

One fine sunny day, we took les vélos over to brunch in Leslieville, where we met up with our friend Lady J (no relation to SerialJay), who rode her super fierce Aquila mountain bike. Now I must explain that Lady J is a consummate Driver, with a capital D. The fact that she took her bicycle across the city for our brunch date was monumental. Vas-y Lady J!

Here are the two Jays looking over Murdoch.

Here are the two of us posing with our bikes in front of the the brunch spot. SerialJay tried to get an "action shot" of us, but apparently we weren't very good models.

Serial Jay et moi: On arrive!

Et maintenant on s'en va! Just like the summer.

Oh yes, brunch was absolumment fabuleux and I say that sans ironie. (Much better than a previous visit--on a Sunday). Lady J and I have the quiche lorraine, with its perfectly fondant eggs. And all I remember about SerialJay's meal is that he had the pear tart and did not save any for me.
