Notre coup de coeur <3 du moment...

How not to use a U-lock

Fall is officially upon us, which means shorter days, cooler mornings, more traffic and...less bike parking at work. Yes, we're still riding.

While I'm in awe of the number of people who take their bikes to my workplace, I hate arriving at work to find all the ring and post bike stands taken! I balk at locking up at the regular bike racks because:
- it's a struggle to slide my small bike into and out of the racks alongside the giant-sized "regular" beater bikes
- given the tight space, it's a HUGE hassle to use my U-lock and cable combo. In short, ça m'énerve.

Yes, it takes me forever to lock-up (compared to SerialJay, au moins*) because I'm terrified of coming out to find my bike missing (entirely or partially). Hence the U-lock and cable combo. Obviously (or maybe not), having both does not mean you are immune to bike theft. Take for example this bike, which was parked at my workplace today:

It's a decent bike, minus the missing saddle. Here's a close-up of the famous U-lock and cable combo:

No comment except that that Hal would most likely give this guy an F. On the plus side, at least he's not taking up space at a ring and post :p

*I think this calls for a timed "lock-off" between SerialJay and I.
